2017 ESKOM EXPO FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS: Regional Final
5th August

The Eskom Expo for Young Scientists is South Africa’s leading, and only existing, national science fair that affords learners the opportunity to enter a project to exhibit their own scientific investigation. The project aims to inspire and develop young scientists who are able to identify a problem, analyse information, find solutions and communicate findings effectively.

Learners must first enter a project into one of 35 regional finals held between July and September every year, and the best projects will then be selected for participation in the International Science Fair in Pretoria in early October.

The 2017 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Grahamstown Regional Final is coordinated by Scifest Africa, sponsored by Eskom and Rhodes University, and will be held in Grahamstown in August 2017.

Fantastic prizes are up for grabs at the Regional Final, including five scholarships for the first year of study in the fields of science at Rhodes University, trophies, medals and book prizes, while prizes at the International Science Fair include selection to represent South Africa at other international science fairs abroad, scholarships, trophies, medals, and other prizes such as books and iReaders, laptops and tablets.

The entry fee for the Regional Final is minimal at R25-00 per learner thanks to sponsorship from Eskom and Rhodes University.

The Letter of Intent indicates the school’s intent to enter projects into the 2017 Eskom Expo for Young Scientists and will assist Scifest Africa with the organisation of the Regional Final. The signed Letter of Intent must reach the Scifest Africa office no later than Friday, 27 January 2017.

The List of Categories indicates the categories into which projects may be entered for the Regional Final and is useful to educators and learners as a starting point for ideas for projects.

Please note that a learner may only enter one project in one category at the Regional Final. Individual entries are encouraged, and while a maximum of two learners may work together on a project, only one individual will be allowed to represent the project at the International Science Fair. Agreement must therefore be reached between learners, before the Regional Final, as to who will represent the project should it be selected for entry into the International Science Fair.
